Guelph Storm outlast Greyhounds for victory in shootout

GUELPH – Danny Zhilkin’s goal put an end to a marathon shootout and lifted the Guelph Storm to a 3-2 victory over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in Ontario Hockey League play at the Sleeman Centre on Family Day Monday.

Zhilkin was the Storm’s eight shooter in the shootout and the second to score. Guelph’s second shooter, Pavel Gogolev, had given the Storm the early lead in the shootout, but Rory Kerins pulled the Greyhounds even in the third round.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before the Storm scored the lone goal of the second. Sault Ste. Marie forced the game into overtime when the Greyhounds scored with 1:25 to go in regulation time.

Clark Hiebert and Eric Uba tallied in regulation time for the Storm while assists went to Daniil Chayka, Jacob Maillet, Gogolev and Cam Hillis.

Joe Carroll and Tye Kartye had the goals for Sault Ste. Marie while Robert Calisti assisted on both goals and Kerins and Jaromir Pytlik each had an assist.

The Greyhounds outshot the Storm 33-31. Sault Ste. Marie didn’t score on its lone power play while the Storm was held scoreless on three power plays.

Nico Daws had the shootout win for the Storm. He had 31 saves while Sault Ste. Marie’s Bailey Birkin had 29 saves.

The Storm is third in the Midwest Division and sixth in the Western Conference at 28-19-2-5. Kitchener Rangers are second in the division at 34-14-5-2- and are 12 points ahead of the Storm who are four ahead of the fourth-place Owen Sound Attack (26-21-4-3) and six ahead of the fifth-place Erie Otters (23-20-4-7).

Windsor Spitfires are fifth in the conference, six points ahead of the Storm at 32-15-5-0. Owen Sound is seventh, Erie eighth and Sault Ste. Marie (25-28-2-1) ninth, four points behind Erie. Top eight qualify for the playoffs.

The Storm have 14 games to go in their regular season. They’re to host London Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Niagara IceDogs (fourth in the Central Division and eighth in the Eastern Conference at 17-33-4-1) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
