Guelph Storm rallies to triple Owen Sound Attack

GUELPH – Three goals in the second period and three in the third, including a pair of empty-netters, sparked the Guelph Storm to a 6-2 victory over the Owen Sound Attack Monday afternoon at the Sleeman Centre.

The game was the first of three consecutive home games for the Storm.

Former Storm forward Matthew Papais scored both goals for Owen Sound. The first one came 2:44 into the first period to open the scoring in the game while the second one came with 2:10 to go in the second to cut the Storm’s lead to 3-2.

Cooper Walker, Braeden Bowman and Michael Buchinger scored for the Storm in the second and Bowman, Matthew Poitras and Charlie Paquette tallied in the third. Poitras had two assists while Max Namestnikov, Buchinger, Zackary Sandhu, Bowman, Walker, Jake Murray, Payton Robinson and Valentin Zhugin each had one.

Ethan Burroughs and Colby Barlow had assists for Owen Sound.

The Attack outshot the Storm 38-34. The locals went 2-for-6 on their power play while the Attack was scoreless on four power plays.

The Storm also won 45 of the game’s 74 faceoffs.

Patrick Leaver had 36 saves for the Storm while Nick Chenard had 28 saves.

The result leaves the Attack (26-21-4-1) and Storm (26-24-4-1) tied for fifth in the Western Conference, two points ahead of the seventh-place Flint Firebirds (25-26-4-1) and six behind the fourth-place Saginaw Spirit (30-21-2-1). Owen Sound has three games in hand on Guelph.

The Storm are to host the Soo Greyhounds (ninth in conference at 16-24-9-5) Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the London Knights (tied for first in conference at 39-14-1-0) Sunday at 2 p.m.
