Guelph Storm slips by Erie in OT again

GUELPH – Cedric Ralph’s goal 20 seconds into overtime gave the Guelph Storm a 5-4 victory over the Erie Otters in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The goal allowed the Storm to get a victory out of a game they led by two goals at the beginning of the third period.

The Storm was up 2-1 at the end of the first period and 4-2 after the second before Erie came back to square the score and take the game into overtime. Owen Headrick’s power-play goal for Erie with 13 seconds to go in regulation time tied the score 4-4 and forced the overtime.

Ralph led the Storm with a pair of goals while Cam Hillis, Givani Smith and Tag Bertuzzi also scored, Bertuzzi’s goal being the first of his OHL career. Barret Kirwin had two assists while single assists were awarded to Alexey Toropchenko, Ryan Merkley, Nate Schnarr, Zach Poirier, Mason Primeau, Dmitri Samorukov and Garrett McFadden.

Ivan Lodnia, Maxim Golod, Joseph Mack and Headrick had a goal apiece for Erie while assists were given to Jordan Sambrook, Josh Wainman, Cade Robinson, Gera Poddubnyi, Christian Girhiny, Patrick Fellows, Kyle Maksimovich and Taylor Raddysh.

The Otters outshot the Storm 38-37 and both teams scored a power-play goal, Erie on two power plays and Guelph on three.

Anthony Popovich picked up the win in net for the Storm while Troy Timpano was charged with the loss.

The Storm’s becoming overtime warriors at home. They’ve had seven games this season that have gone beyond regulation time and five of them have been at the Sleeman Centre and the Storm have won three of those five games.

Guelph and Erie have also gone beyond regulation time in three of their meetings this season and the Storm have won two of them, both at home.

The Storm is tied for second in the Midwest Division with the Owen Sound Attack as they have identical 13-10-1-2 records. The Storm and Attack are to play at Owen Sound’s Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre for the second consecutive Saturday night. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Guelph won 4-2 at Owen Sound last Saturday.
