
Guelph Storm slips by Oshawa Generals in shootout
OSHAWA – Valentin Zhugin’s goal in a shootout gave the Guelph Storm a 5-4 victory over the Oshawa Generals in OHL play Saturday night at the Tribute Communities Centre.
The Storm never led in regulation time and needed a goal from Max Namestnikov with 1:12 to go in the third period to force an eventual scoreless overtime and then the shootout.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Oshawa led 3-2 at the end of the second.
Cooper Walker, Matthew Poitras and Braeden Bowman scored the other goals for Guelph while Poitras and Michael Buchinger each had two assists while Jake Murray and Jake Karabela each had one.
Scoring a goal apiece for Oshawa were Matthew Buckley, Joseph Serpa, Ryder McIntyre and Stuart Rolofs. Single assists were awarded to Ty Petrou, Serpa, Calum Ritchie and Luca D’Amato.
The Storm outshot the Generals 40-33 and both teams went 1-for-3 on their power plays.
Brayden Gillespie had 29 saves for the Storm while Jacob Oster had 36 saves.
The win was Guelph’s first in three games.
The Storm is tied for sixth in the Western Conference with the Flint Firebirds, but have a game in hand on Flint. Guelph’s at 25-24-4-1 while Flint’s at 25-25-4-1.
The Generals are tied for eighth in the Eastern Conference at 22-24-1-5 while the Sudbury Wolves are at 21-22-5-3 and have a game in hand over Oshawa.
Top two teams in the Western Conference, the Windsor Spitfires (37-12-3-1) and London Knights (38-14-1-0) are the first two teams in the league to secure playoff berths this season.
The Owen Sound Attack are fifth in the Western Conference at 26-20-4-1, two points ahead of the Storm and Firebirds, and they are to play the Storm Monday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 2 p.m.
