Guelph Storm starts in a hurry to dump Spirit

SAGINAW – Three goals in less than two and a half minutes in the opening period sparked the Guelph Storm to a 7-3 victory over the Saginaw Spirit in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday night at Saginaw’s Dow Event Center.

The trio of goals led the Storm to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first period while all the scoring in the game was complete by the end of the second.

The Storm outshot the Spirit 41-24, but were scoreless on four power plays while Saginaw went 1-for-4 on its power play.

A total of 13 players collected points for the Storm as Ryan McGuire and Brayden Guy scored twice apiece and Ben McFarlane, Cooper Walker and Braeden Bowman each had single goals. Walker had two assists while Charlie Paquette, Cameron Supryka, Michael Buchinger, Guy, Cam Allen, Chase Coughlan, McFarlane, Jake Karabela, Sasha Pastujov and Daniil Chayka had one apiece.

Guy has seven goals and five assists in the 13 games he’s played with the Storm since being traded to Guelph from the Sarnia Sting a month ago.

Scoring for Saginaw were Dalton Duhart, Dean Loukus and Josh Bloom. Pavel Mintyukov assisted on two of the goals while Roberto Mancini, Matyas Sapovaliv and Loukus each had one assist.

The Storm outshot the Spirit 41-24 while both teams had four power plays and Saginaw had the lone power-play goal of the game.

Owen Bennett had 21 saves for the win for Guelph while Andrew Oke had 34 saves for Saginaw.

The game had an attendance of 3,356.

The Storm are to play the London Knights at London’s Budweiser Gardens Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
