Guelph Storm strike in shootout to stop Sarnia Sting

SARNIA – Sasha Pastujov’s goal in a shootout gave the Guelph Storm a 6-5 victory over the Sarnia Sting Wednesday night at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

Pastujov was the only player to score in the shootout as three Sarnia players and one other Storm player failed to put the puck in the net in the shootout.

The goal allowed the Storm to win a game they led by three goals early in the second and by two goals with three minutes to go in the third.

However, Cooper Way and Nolan Burke scored 15 seconds apart for Sarnia in the final three minutes of regulation time to force a scoreless five-minute overtime period and ultimately the shootout.

The Storm led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 4-3 after the second.

Charlie Paquette had two goals for the Storm during regulation time while Ryan McGuire, Hunter McKnight and Ben McFarlane added single goals. Assists went to Cam Allen, Cooper Walker, Payton Robinson, Gavin Grundner, Jake Karabela and Niko Minkkinen.

Burke had a hat trick for Sarnia while Way and Sandis Vilmanis netted a goal apiece. Ty Voit assisted on four of the goals while single assists were awarded to Marcus Limpar-Lantz, Alexis Daviault, Vilmanis and Ethan Ritchie.

The Sting outshot the Storm 31-22 and went 3-for-5 on their power play while the Storm didn’t score on their lone power play.

The win lifted the Storm’s record to 3-9-2-0 and they’re tied for ninth in the Western Conference with the Kitchener Rangers (4-7-0-0) although the Rangers have three games in hand.

Windsor Spitfires lead the conference at 8-1-3-0 while the Owen Sound Attack is second at 9-4-0-0 and Sarnia (7-4-1-1) and Erie Otters (7-4-0-2) are tied for third. Following are the Saginaw Spirit (7-5-1-0), Flint Firebirds (7-6-0-0), Soo Greyhounds (4-5-3-1), London Knights (5-5-1-0), Kitchener and the Storm.

The victory came in the first of five consecutive road games for the Storm. They’re to play in Sault Ste. Marie Friday at 7:07 p.m. and in Flint Saturday at 7 p.m.

Next week the Storm are to play the North Bay Battalion (fifth in Eastern Conference at 7-4-0-0) at North Bay Thursday (Nov. 10) at 7 p.m. and the Sudbury Wolves (tied for ninth in Eastern Conference at 3-8-1-0) at Sudbury Friday (Nov. 11) at 7:05 p.m. They’re also to host Sarnia next Sunday (Nov. 13) at 4 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
