Guelph Storm survives to play again

LONDON – The Guelph Storm scored twice in the third period to avoid elimination for the second consecutive game as they handed the London Knights a 3-1 setback Friday night in Ontario Hockey League Western Conference semifinal play at Budweiser Gardens.

London leads the best-of-seven series 3-2.

After the teams scored a goal apiece in the first period Friday, they battled through a scoreless stretch that ended with a Nick Suzuki goal just shy of the four-minute mark of the third. Suzuki added an empty-netter with 13 seconds to go in the game.

Domenico Commisso had scored midway through the first for the Storm who never trailed in the game.

Isaac Ratcliffe had two assists and Sean Durzi and Commisso each had one.

Alex Formenton connected for London’s goal with 53 seconds to go in the opening period. Cole Tymkin and Billy Moskal drew assists.

Anthony Popovich turned aside 35 shots to get the win in the Storm net while Jordan Kooy had 32 saves for London.

Both teams went scoreless on seven power plays.

Sixth game of the series is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.

If the Storm wins that game, the seventh and final game of the series is to go Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Budweiser Gardens.
