Guelph Storm yield three goals in first, fall to London

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm yielded a trio of goals in the first period including a pair 57 seconds apart with less than two minutes to go in the period as they suffered a 5-1 loss to the London Knights in OHL play Saturday at the Sleeman Centre.

It was London’s first of three visits to Guelph. The teams had already played three regular-season games at London’s Budweiser Gardens with London winning two of them, one in overtime, and the Storm winning the other one.

Saturday, Braeden Bowman scored the Storm’s lone goal on a power play early in the second period. Matthew Poitras and Michael Buchinger picked up assists.

London led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 4-1 after the second.

Ryan Humphrey opened and closed the scoring for the Knights while single goals were added by George Diaco, Logan Mailloux and Denver Barkley. Sean McGurn assisted on three of the goals while Ruslan Gazizov had two assists and Oliver Bonk, Mailloux, Barkley, Ryan Winterton and Humphrey had one apiece.

London outshot the Storm 33-26 and went 2-for-7 on its power play while the Storm went 1-for-9.

Brayden Gillespie had 28 saves for the Storm while Zach Bowen had 25 for the Knights.

The Storm are seventh in the Western Conference at 23-22-4-1, a point behind the Flint Firebirds (24-25-3-1) who doubled the Owen Sound Attack 4-2 at Owen Sound Saturday night. The Storm have three games in hand on Flint.

London is second in the conference at 36-13-1-0, a point behind the Windsor Spitfires (36-13-1-0).

The Storm are to play the Peterborough Petes, fifth in the Eastern Conference at 26-21-1-2, to wrap up a 3-in-3 weekend Sunday at 2:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Guelph and London are to meet two more times at the Sleeman Centre during the regular season as they’re to battle Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. and March 15 at 7 p.m.
