Guelph Storm’s win streak crumbles in Flint

FLINT – There must be something about Flint’s Dort Financial Center that just doesn’t suit the Guelph Storm.

The Storm’s OHL win streak came to a crashing end there Saturday night as they were hammered 10-3 for the first loss in seven games.

The win gave the Firebirds a 3-1 victory in the season series between the teams with the other game in Flint Nov. 5 ending with the Firebirds winning 9-5.

Saturday, the Firebirds led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 7-2 after the second.

Matthew Poitras was involved in all three goals for the Storm as he had a goal and two assists. Braeden Bowman had a goal and an assist and Max Namestnikov scored the other goal. Chandler Romeo had two assists.

Gavin Hayes and Simon Slavicek each had two goals for Flint while Nathan Aspinall, Zacharie Giroux, Artem Guryev, Owen Pitters, Amadeus Lombardi and Marko Stojkov added single goals. Coulson Pitre, Riley Piercey and Lombardi each had two assists while Tyler Deline, Triastan Bertucci, Alex Bradshaw, Kaden Pitre, Hayes, Slavicek, Giroux, Dmitry Kuzmin and Guryev had one assist apiece.

Flint’s goal included three in a span of 90 seconds in the first half of the second period.

The Firebirds outshot the Storm 44-24 and hit double digits in shots in each period while holding the Storm to single digits in shots in each period.

The Storm was scoreless on their lone power play while Flint went 1-for-5 on its power play.

Nathan Day had 21 saves for the Firebirds.

Brayden Gillespie started in net for the Storm and was replaced at 8:41 of the second period by Patrick Leaver after Flint’s sixth goal. Leaver went the rest of the way and had 19 saves while Gillespie had 15.

Saturday’s loss was the second time the Storm allowed 10 goals in a game this season. The other time was Oct. 1, a 10-6 loss to the Saginaw Spirit in Saginaw in their second game of the season.

The Storm are fifth in the Western Conference at 30-25-4-1, one point behind fourth-place Saginaw (31-24-2-2), two ahead of the tied duo of the Owen Sound Attack (29-23-4-1) and Flint (29-26-4-1) and five ahead of the eighth-place Kitchener Rangers (28-26-4-0).

Guelph has eight games to play as does Flint while Saginaw has nine games to go, Kitchener has 10 to go and Owen Sound has 11 to go.

The Storm are to play the Rangers at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Tuesday at 7 p.m.
