Guelph United hangs on to edge North Toronto Nitros

GUELPH – A three-goal lead early in a soccer game might be the worst lead to have. It’s just enough to make you think you’ll have an easy time of it the rest of the way.

That’s the situation Guelph United found themselves in Tuesday night in their Centennial Bowl debut in League1 Ontario Men’s Premier soccer play.

A pair of goals four minutes apart late in the first half gave them a 4-1 lead over the North Toronto Nitros at the intermission. However, the Nitros rallied in the second half and scored twice in a seven-minute span midway through the half. However, United hung on for the 4-3 victory.

Harvey Marchant put United ahead three minutes into the match and they were never headed after that.

Milan Beader connected for a pair of goals, one on a penalty kick, for United later in the half although they sandwiched a North Toronto goal by Bilal Reslan.

Cole Fernandez completed the first-half scoring with five minutes to go before stoppage time when he struck for the fourth goal for the hosts.

Asher Barnes brought North Toronto back into the reckoning as he scored both second-half goals.

Carter Robart collected the win in net for United.

The victory was the third in a row for the locals and it kept them undefeated as those followed a pair of season-opening ties. They’re tied for fifth in the 21-team league at 3-0-2.

The loss dropped North Toronto to 3-2-1.

Next up for United is a home game at the Centennial Bowl Sunday against BVB IA Waterloo (1-4-0). Game time is 5:30 p.m.
