Guelph United hits road for their first win of season

SCARBOROUGH – Guelph United struck for their first win on the League1 Ontario Men’s Premier soccer season Saturday as they slipped by Alliance United FC 2-1 at Centennial College.

All three goals in the game came in the second half, the locals getting their pair before Alliance avoided the blanking with four minutes to go in regulation time.

Guelph’s Jack Sears connected for the opening goal in the 51st minute and Marcel Zajac added a second goal 21 minutes later.

Late-game sub Anthony Sousa tallied for Alliance to take the clean sheet away from goalkeeper Sam Spoelstra.

The result leaves defending champion Guelph United with a record of a win and a tie.

They’re to have another road game next Saturday when they’re to tangle with ProStars FC at Brampton’s Victoria Park at 7 p.m. ProStars have a win and a loss in their two outings.

Next home game for the Guelph side is to be their preliminary-round match of the Canadian championship tournament against Halifax’s HFX Wanderers of the Canadian Premier League. That game is set for May 10 at Alumni Stadium starting at 7 p.m.

The Wanderers have two wins and two losses in CPL play.

Winner of that preliminary-round game is to host Toronto FC of Major League Soccer in the national tournament’s quarter-finals that are slated to be played May 24 to 26.
