Guelph United, Sigma FC tie one on at Alumni Stadium

GUELPH – Despite a late push by Guelph United, they had to settle for a scoreless draw with Sigma FC of Mississauga in a battle of two teams in the top half of the League1 Ontario Men’s Premier soccer league standings.

While both teams took turns applying pressure during the game, United’s best opportunities came in the final 10 minutes of the match while Sigma had pushed during the first 10 to 15 minutes of the game at Alumni Stadium.

However, most of the action was limited to the midfield area as the defenders on both sides shut down the opposition forwards.

Svyatoslav Artemenko picked up the clean sheet for United while Eduard Ambrus had the shutout for Sigma.

Sigma was also whistled for four yellow cards while United had one.

The tie leaves United at 5-2-2 and Sigma at 4-4-2.

North Toronto Nitros (7-2-1) lead the league with 22 points while Vaughan Azzurri (6-0-2) has 20. Alliance United (5-1-2) of Scarborough, Simcoe Country Rovers (5-2-2), United and Blue Devils (4-0-5) of Oakville all have 17 and Sigma (4-4-2) has 14.

United is to host Pickering FC (3-6-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
