Hagersville Hawks halt Hespeler Shamrocks’ win streak
HAGERSVILLE – The Hespeler Shamrocks saw their four-game winning streak in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Bloomfield Division come to an end Saturday night as they were dropped 7-2 by the Hagersville Hawks at the Hagersville arena.
Hagersville struck for the first four goals of the game and led 5-1 after the first period before a scoreless second period in which a total of 69 minutes in penalties were assessed including two 10-minute misconducts and six fighting majors. The total didn’t include nine game misconducts (six of them were automatic with the fighting majors) and two gross misconducts (both for removing helmets in fights).
The rest of the game saw 12 minutes in penalties and a gross misconduct for shooting the puck over the glass.
Austin Reilly and Kyle Wagner scored the goals for Hespeler while assists went to Tony Tikel and Nick Donelle.
Ralph Taggart had a hat trick for Hagersville while Luke Erauw scored twice and Alastair Irvine and Alex Milanovich each had one goal. Jayden Lammel collected three assists while Matt Weston had two and Brendan Judson, Erauw, Harrison Larochelle, Wesley Fritz, Sebastian Loreti and Peter Cappucci had one each.
Hespeler was assessed 56 penalty minutes in the game while Hagersville, the least penalized team in the division, took 25 minutes. The Hawks had eight power plays and scored on three of them while the Shamrocks were scoreless on four power plays.
Hagersville outshot Hespeler 26-14, although the only shots counted in the third period were the goals scored in that period – two for Hagersville and one for Hespeler.
Gavin McLeod was charged with the loss in the Hespeler net. He was credited with 19 saves while winning goalie Avery Hartwick of Hagersville was credited with 12 saves.
Hagersville is third in the eight-team division at 15-4-1-2 while Hespeler is fifth at 9-14-0-1.
The Shamrocks are to host the second-place Glanbrook Rangers (17-8-0-0) Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
The Shamrocks and Hagersville are also to clash at the Hespeler arena Dec. 8 at 3:30 p.m.
