Hanover hands Patriots first setback of season

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots suffered their first loss of the season in PJHL play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex when they were edged 3-2 by the Hanover Barons.

The Patriots had recorded 13 wins and a tie in their previous 14 league outings.

After a scoreless first period, the Patriots shot ahead with the first two goals of the second, but Hanover tied it with a pair of goals 52 seconds apart late in the second.

Carter Moran’s power-play goal with 3:46 to go in regulation time capped Hanover’s comeback and gave the Barons the win. Ryan Goetz and Payton McIsaac assisted on the play.

Caleb Cribbin and Austin Griffin each had a goal and an assist for Mount Forest while Aaron McGuirk and Bryan Richardson each collected an assist.

Curtis Arnold and Chris Ferri scored the other goals for Hanover while assists went to McIsaac and Riley McCabe.

The Barons outshot the Patriots 32-28 and went 2-for-4 on their power play while the Patriots went 1-for-7.

While the Patriots lead the Pollock Division at 13-1-0-1, Hanover has closed to within two points at 11-1-2-1. They’re followed by the Mitchell Hawks (9-3-1-2), Wingham Ironmen (8-6-1-1), Kincardine Bulldogs (6-9-1-0), Walkerton Capitals (2-11-0-1) and Goderich Flyers (1-14-0-0).

The game was the second of four consecutive home games for the Patriots. They’re to host Mitchell Friday at 8 p.m. and Wingham Saturday at 8 p.m.
