Heart-breaking setback for Gryphon volleyball women

HAMILTON – The Guelph Gryphons suffered a heart-breaking loss to the McMaster Marauders to end the 2018 portion of their OUA women’s volleyball season Saturday night at McMaster’s Burridge Gymnasium.

After winning the first two sets, the Gryphs were edged 3-2 by McMaster.

Guelph won the first two sets by 25-22 and 25-15 scores, but McMaster came back to win with 25-21, 25-22 and 19-17 set victories.

The Gryphs built an early 7-1 lead on their way to the first-set victory. It was a similar story in the second set as they led 7-2. They were also ahead 5-1 in the third set before McMaster came back and four consecutive points late in the match put the Marauders ahead for good.

McMaster started fast in the fourth set, going ahead 6-1 before Guelph rallied to tie it at 8 and eventually lead 16-12. However, the Marauders came back for the win, scoring the final five points in the process.

The Gryphs had their chances to win the fifth set and the match, but couldn’t put McMaster away. Guelph served three times for the win, but the Marauders stood their ground and eventually won by collecting the final two points of the match.

Hazel Atkins had nine kills, three aces and seven digs for the Gryphs while Noa Pijil had 10 kills, an assist, two aces and seven digs and Lisa Wedel picked up eight kills, an ace and two blocks.

Jessie Nairn had 20 kills, an assist, an ace, five digs and a block for McMaster while Hailey Kranics had seven kills, an assist seven digs and seven blocks.

The result leaves the two teams tied although McMaster has a game in hand. The Gryphs are at 4-4 and McMaster’s at 4-3.

The Gryphs will be away from league play until Jan. 12 when they’re to play the Toronto Varsity Blues (6-2) at Toronto’s Goldring Centre.
