Hespeler done in by Grimsby’s first-period goals
CAMBRIDGE – Two goals in the first period proved to be the difference in the game as the Hespeler Shamrocks were handed a 4-2 setback by the Grimsby Peach Kings in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
The teams scored once each in the second and third periods after Grimsby claimed a 2-0 lead in the opening period.
Austin Reilly and Matthew Diebolt scored power-play goals for Hespeler while Nick Donelle, Matthew Hayward, Dylan Beitz and Devin Schneider each had an assist.
Jack Venneri had two goals for Grimsby while Maxime Pleau and Maxim Ljuboja added single goals. Assists went to Mason Gibson, Pleau, Dravin Maye, London Murray, Jacob Balca and Bailey Stumpo.
Grimsby outshot the Shamrocks 38-32 and went 1-for-5 on its power play while Hespeler went 2-for-6.
Gavin McLeod had 34 saves, but took the loss in the Hespeler net. Riley Maskell had 30 saves for Grimsby.
The loss was the second in a row to an undefeated squad for the Shamrocks as they had been beaten 4-3 by the Hagersville Hawks in Hagersville Saturday night.
Last season the Shamrocks lost five of their six games against Grimsby. While they had a win in overtime at home, they were outscored 30-5 in the six games and never scored at Grimsby.
The losses leave Hespeler at 3-5-0-0 this season, good for fifth in the eight-team Bloomfield Division. Hagersville leads at 7-0-0-1 and Grimsby is second at 7-0-0-0.
Sunday’s game was the first of four consecutive home games for the Shamrocks. They’re to host the Glanbrook Rangers (4-5-0-0) Sunday (Oct. 13) at 3:30 p.m. in their next outing.
