Hespeler Shamrocks double Dunnville for openers

DUNNVILLE – The Hespeler Shamrocks began their Provincial Junior Hockey League season with a 4-2 victory over the Dunnville Mudcats Friday night at the Dunnville Memorial Arena.

The game marked the first regular-season junior C game for a Hespeler franchise since the previous version of the Shamrocks became the Cambridge Shamrocks and played home games at the Preston Auditorium in 1979.

Last season the franchise was based in Simcoe and known as the Storm.

Friday, the Shamrocks scored twice in each of the second and third periods for the win.

After a scoreless first period, Hespeler was up 2-1 at the end of the second.

Jakob Murdoch and Connor Schmalz scored for Dunnville while Joshua Phibbs assisted on both goals and Noah Czyzewsski had one assist.

The Shamrocks outshot Dunnville 32-28, including a 14-4 advantage in the third period, and both teams had five power plays with the host Mudcats getting the only power-play goal of the game.

The goaltender who made 26 saves for the win in net for Hespeler was also not identified. Jesse Schoeman had 28 saves in a losing cause for Dunnville.
