Hespeler Shamrocks dropped by Niagara

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks wrapped up the home portion of their Provincial Junior Hockey League regular season with a 6-1 loss to the Niagara RiverHawks Saturday night at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

Niagara scored three times in the first period, once in the second and twice in the third while Hespeler’s lone goal came at 1:32 of the third.

Matthew Tonner scored that goal with help from Dylan Beitz.

Zachary Pettit had a hat trick for Niagara while single goals were added by Derek Pymont, Dante Massi and Mason Durant. Jacob Saddler and Tyler Seguin each had two assists and single assists were awarded to Karl Lavoie, Massi and Zach Snider.

Niagara outshot the Shamrocks 33-29 and the RiverHawks went 1-for-4 on their power play while the Shamrocks were scoreless on three power plays.

Mathew Boere had 28 saves for the win in the Niagara net while Hespeler’s Connor Pickard took the loss. He had 27 saves in his first outing since Jan. 10, also against Niagara.

The game was Niagara’s final game of the regular season. The RiverHawks finish fifth in the Bloomfield Division at 20-17-0-0 and will face the fourth-place Hamilton Huskies Junior Blues in the quarter-finals.

The loss leaves the Shamrocks at 7-31-1-2 with one game to go – Sunday afternoon in Port Dover against the sixth-place Port Dover Sailors (12-24-2-3).

The Shamrocks will finish eighth in the division and play the first-place Glanbrook Rangers (36-4-0-2) in a best-of-seven divisional quarter-final series that is to start Wednesday night at Glanbrook.
