Hespeler Shamrocks get out of town for win over Niagara
NIAGARA FALLS – The Hespeler Shamrocks got away from home to return to their winning ways as they clouted the Niagara RiverHawks 8-3 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Thursday night at the Gale Centre.
The Shamrocks had three goals in a span on four minutes and 39 seconds to lead 3-1 at the end of the first period before they went up 5-1 by the end of the second.
Kyle Wagner struck for a hat trick for Hespeler while Troy Moffitt and Gavin Logher scored twice each and Devin Schneider added the other goal. Schneider also had three assists while Brett Hartin, Nick Donelle, Ryan Frost, Josh Hillis and Matthew Tonner had two each and Joseph Tabet, Wagner and Noah Trudeau had one apiece.
Zachary Pettit, Dante Massi and Keith Palmer scored the goals for Niagara. Assists were awarded to Carter LeRoux, Matthew Stacey, Palmer, Brady Bannon, Massi and Giacomo Cotrufo.
The Shamrocks outshot Niagara 42-33 and went 1-for-5 on their power play. They also held Niagara scoreless on five power plays.
Gavin McLeod had 30 saves to get the win in the Hespeler net.
Gavan Banga started and had 23 saves for Niagara before being relieved by Mathew Boere after Hespeler’s fifth goal at 4:25 of the third. Boere had 11 saves the rest of the way.
The win lifts the Shamrocks to 4-8-0-0 while Niagara falls to 2-7-0-2-. All four wins for Hespeler have come in away games.
The Shamrocks are to play the Port Dover Sailors () at the Port Dover arena Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
