Hespeler Shamrocks handed setback by Hagersville

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks yielded a pair of second-period goals as they were handed a 4-1 setback by the Hagersville Hawks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Wednesday night at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

The teams had each scored a power-play goal in the first period before Hagersville shot ahead for good with its second-period goals that were netted just over four-minutes apart after the midway point of the period. The Hawks completed the scoring with an empty-netter with five seconds to go in the match.

Brett Hartin scored the lone goal for Hespeler while assists on the goal were awarded to Devin Schneider and Kyle Wagner.

Mitch Gauthier, Ralph Taggart, Jackson Themeles and Nick Visser collected a goal apiece for Hagersville while Brendan Judson, Wesley Fritz, Patrick Sanelli, Keegan Cumming, Eamon Fitzpatrick and Matt Weston each had an assist.

Hagersville outshot the Shamrocks 29-20. The Hawks went 1-for-8 on their power play while Hespeler went 1-for-5.

Justin Easter made 19 saves in the Hagersville net for the win while Gavin McLeod was charged with the loss in the Hespeler net. He had 25 saves.

Hagersville (16-13-2-2) moves to third in the Bloomfield Division with the win while the Shamrocks are eighth at 5-25-1-1.

The game was the first of three in four days for the Shamrocks as they’re to play the second-place Grimsby Peach Kings (25-4-1-0) at Grimsby Friday at 7:30 p.m. and host the fourth-place Hamilton Huskies Junior Blues (16-14-1-2) Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
