Hespeler Shamrocks rally to drop Dunnville Mudcats
DUNNVILLE – The Hespeler Shamrocks scored four consecutive goals to rebound from a two-goal deficit late in the second period to down the Dunnville Mudcats 5-3 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Dunnville Memorial Arena.
Dunnville led 3-1 with 10 seconds to go in the second period, but Hespeler started its winning rally with a power-play goal with six seconds to go in the period.
Hespeler pulled even with another power-play goal at 12:52 of the third before Kyle Wagner scored the final two goals of the game to lift Hespeler to the win.
Wagner was involved in all five of Hespeler’s goals as he finished with a hat trick and two assists. Matthew Hayward and Dylan Beitz also scored while single assists went to Tony Tikel, Ryan Frost, Drew Fulton, Hayward and Austin Reilly.
Matt Dolan, Matt Gallant and Seth McMahon each had a goal for Dunnville while Damian Garbutt, Alex McAteer, Jack MacDonald, James Bradshaw, Ethan Garbutt and Patrick Kucerik each collected one assist.
The Shamrocks outshot Dunnville 31-19 and went 2-for-6 on their power play. Dunnville was scoreless on seven power plays.
Gavin McLeod picked up the win in the Shamrocks net with 16 saves while Mitch Harvey of Dunnville had 26 saves.
Hespeler moves to 1-3-0-0 in Bloomfield Division play while Dunnville falls to 1-4-0-0.
The game was the first of four consecutive road games for the Shamrocks. They’re to play the Port Dover Sailors (0-4-0-0) at Port Dover Sunday at 2 p.m., Dundas Blues (4-2-0-0) at Dundas Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Hagersville Hawks (4-0-0-1) at Hagersville Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Next home game for the Shamrocks at the Hespeler Memorial Arena is set for Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m. against the Grimsby Peach Kings (4-0-0-0).
