Hespeler Shamrocks toppled by Niagara

CAMBRIDGE – Two goals in the third period secured a 4-1 win for the Niagara RiverHawks over the Hespeler Shamrocks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Niagara jumped into a 2-1 lead by the end of the second.

Joseph Tabet  had an unassisted goal late in the second period for Hespeler.

Keith Palmer scored twice for Niagara while Nick Volpatti and Jacob Saddler added single goals. Daniel Volpatti and Josh Urbshott collected two assists apiece while Matt McKeraghan, Zach Snider and Giacomo Cotrufo each had one assist.

Niagara outshot Hespeler 46-25 and went 0-for-8 on their power play while Hespeler went 0-for-4.

Gavin MacLeod was charged with the loss in the Hespeler net. He made 42 saves while winning netminder Dylan Matos of Niagara made 24 saves.

The RiverHawks won despite playing with 17 players including the two goaltenders. Hespeler had 21.

Niagara has won all three games it has played this season while the loss left Hespeler at 1-2-0-0.

The Shamrocks are to play the Hamilton Huskies Junior Blues (1-2-0-0) Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at Hamilton’s Olympic Arena.
