Hillis gives Storm win over Ottawa in OT

OTTAWA – A power-play goal by Cam Hillis in overtime allowed the Guelph Storm to complete its eastern swing with a 5-4 victory over the Ottawa 67’s Sunday afternoon at TD Place.

While the Storm led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second, they needed a goal by Ryan Merkley with 1:41 to go in regulation time to force the overtime.

Hillis led the Storm with two goals and an assist while Zach Poirier, Owen Lalonde and Ryan Merkley also scored. Garrett McFadden, Merkley and Liam Hawel each had two assists while single assists went to Dmitri Samorukov, James McEwan, Hillis and Isaac Ratcliffe.

Tye Felhaber had a goal and two assists for Ottawa while the other goals were scored by Sam Bitten, Sasha Chmelevski and Travis Barron. Quinn Yule, Chmelevski and Barron each had one assist.

The Storm outshot the 67’s 41-34 and went 2-for-6 on their power play while Ottawa was scoreless on three power plays.

Anthony Popovich picked up the win in net for the Storm while Cedrick Andree took the loss for Ottawa.

The win lifts the Storm to 21-17-1-3, third in the Midwest Division and seventh in the Western Conference, one point behind the Saginaw Spirit (22-16-3-0), two behind the Windsor Spitfires (22-15-2-2) and three behind the London Knights (23-17-2-1).

Ottawa is eighth in the Eastern Conference at 17-20-3-2.

The Storm is to host Windsor Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
