Hockey Falcons into boys AAA semifinals

FERGUS – The Centre Wellington Falcons are into Tuesday’s semifinals at the CWOSSA boys AAA high school hockey championship tournament following a win and a loss Monday.

A 4-0 win over the Brantford CI Mustangs in their second game of the day gave the District 10 champion Falcons first place in their pool.

Mitch Bernier, Brett Harrison, Jack McDonald and McCaiden Dixon hit for a goal apiece for Centre Wellington.

The Falcons had opened the tournament with a 3-2 loss to the Huron Heights Huskies of Kitchener.

Dean Sealey and Harrison had the goals for Centre Wellington while Sahrung Sehra, Colter Roughley and Evan Drury scored for Huron Heights.

The three teams in the division finished in a tie as each had a win and a loss. Brantford CI edged Huron Heights 4-3 in a shootout in the other game.

Connor MacPhee scored the winner in the shootout and he also scored earlier in the game as did teammates Brayden Kellen and Colin Wilson. Drury, Nolan Lafrance and Sehra scored for Huron Heights.

The tie was broken using the +/- ratings of the teams. The Falcons were first at +3, Huron Heights second at 0 and Brantford CI third at -3.

The Grand River Renegades of Kitchener finished atop the other pool after a 4-3 win over the Resurrection Phoenix of Kitchener and a 9-0 triumph over the Owen Sound Wolves. Resurrection edged Owen Sound 2-1.

Tuesday’s semifinals have Huron Heights battling Grand River at 9:30 a.m. on one pad of the Sportsplex and Resurrection and Centre Wellington facing off at 10 a.m. on the other. Winners advance to the final set for 2 p.m.
