Hoelscher helps Patriots slip by Walkerton

MOUNT FOREST – Klayton Hoelscher’s goal early in the second period proved to be the winner as the Mount Forest Patriots edged the Walkerton Hawks 2-1 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The teams had scored once apiece in the first period and battled scoreless after Hoelscher’s goal at 4:08 of the second.

Thomas Haffner scored Mount Forest’s other goal while Jordan Tutt, Chris Ferri, Chet Philips and Jack Birkett each had one assist.

Spencer Elder connected for Walkerton’s goal while assists on the play were awarded to Brendan Walsh and Brady Stewart.

Both teams had a single scoreless power play.

The Patriots outshot the Hawks 37-36 while Aidan Quish was the winning netminder for the hosts and Mathew Donnelly took the loss for Walkerton.

Mount Forest is second in the Pollock Division at 19-7-1-0, five points behind the leading Wingham Ironmen (21-5-1-1). Walkerton is sixth at 7-16-3-3.

The Patriots are to play the seventh-place Hanover Barons (9-15-1-2) Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hanover.
