Home squads advance to D10 soccer semifinals

GUELPH – No surprises in the District 10 high school girls’ soccer league’s quarter-finals Tuesday as all four matches ended with the home teams scoring shutout victories.

The Ross Royals blanked the Lourdes Crusaders 7-0, Bishop Macdonell Celtics shut out the Orangeville Bears 3-0, St. James Lions downed the Centre Wellington Falcons 8-0 and the Guelph CVI Green Gaels slipped by the Centennial Spartans 1-0.

The GCVI-Centennial match was expected to be the closest game of the round as it pitted the fourth-place Gaels against the fifth-place Spartans.

Amy Pike scored the game’s only goal just past the midway mark of the first half while Ryley Wheelhouse recorded the shutout.

The results mean the Gaels and Royals are to meet Thursday at 4 p.m. at Ross in one semifinal.

“We’ve been happy with the way the girls have been playing so far. We’re looking for a good game against Ross,” GCVI coach Sebastian Conti said. “As long as we move the ball well and play to our potential, we should be able to play with any team.”

The Royals and Gaels have a recent history of close games. They fought to a scoreless tie last week on the final day of the regular season and they also met in last year’s D10 final.

“We lost to Ross last year in the final in penalty kicks,” Conti said, adding that the team hadn’t really talked about that this year – and a good portion of that team is back.

“We lost a couple of the seniors, but the core of the team is back,” Conti said.

The Gaels finished the regular season in fourth at 4-2-1 while Ross was first at 6-0-1. GCVI lost 2-0 to St. James May 8, had the scoreless tie with Ross May 17 also dropped a 1-0 decision to Bishop Mac that day.

“I think it was just the way the schedule worked that we had the highs and the lows, but the girls have been pretty consistent,” Conti said.

This week’s other semifinal is slated for Friday at 3:45 p.m. when Bishop Mac is to host St. James.

The semifinals will decide D10’s representative in the CWOSSA AAA and AA championship tournaments.

The winner of the GCVI-Ross match will compete in the AAA tournament at Kitchener May 30 and 31 while the St. James-Bishop Mac winner will gain a berth in the AA tournament at Brantford the same two days.
