Host Mooseheads take Memorial Cup opener

HALIFAX – The host Halifax Mooseheads opened the Memorial Cup tournament Friday with a 4-1 victory over the Western Hockey League champion Prince Albert Raiders.

Halifax scored twice in the first period on its way to the win. The Mooseheads led 2-0 at the end of the opening period and 3-1 after the second.

Samuel Asselin, Xavier Parent, Jake Ryczek and Antoine Morand scored the goals for the Mooseheads while Maxim Trépanier assisted on three of the goals. Getting one assist apiece were Raphael Lavoie, Asselin, Keith Getson and Benoit-Olivier Groulx.

Noah Gregor scored for Prince Albert with help from Max Martin and Cole Fonstad.

Halifax outshot Prince Albert 37-24 and went 1-for-6 on its power play while the Raiders were scoreless on four power plays.

Alexis Gravel had 23 saves for Halifax to get the win in net while Ian Scott had 33 saves for Prince Albert.

The Ontario Hockey League champion Guelph Storm are to play the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Rouyn-Noranda Huskies Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
