Howard/Donna Speciale victorious in Champions Open Welcome

ROCKWOOD – Leslie Howard of the U.S. guided Donna Speciale to the victory in Thursday’s $35,500 Open Welcome at Angelstone Tournaments’ Champions meet.

Howard and Donna Speciale negotiated the jump-off course in 36.246 seconds to claim the victory.

Nicholas Dello Joio of the U.S. and Dubai were second in 36.319 seconds and Howard and Quadam were third in 37.562 seconds.

Those three rider/horse combinations were among eight in the field of 22 that had clear first rounds. Howard and Donna Speciale had blazed the first-round course, finishing in 74.15 seconds to be 3.34 seconds faster than the next-fastest clear round set by Howard and Quadam. Susan Horn of Bolton and Balintore finished the first round third fastest in 78.19 seconds and they finished fourth in the jump off in 37.964 seconds.

Dello Joio and Sweet Tricia were fifth in the jump off in 39.720 seconds and Heather Caristo-Williams of the U.S. and Qui Vive Des Songes Z were sixth in 42.041 seconds.

The other two jump-off participants had faults in the extra round. Mark Kinsella of Aurora and Chaloubet were seventh with four faults while Yann Candele of Caledon and Koultan De Torres were eighth with 16 faults.

Most of the rider/horse combinations in the event will be back in Angelstone’s main stadium Saturday for the Champions Grand Prix. It’s set to go at 6 p.m.
