Huge crowd sees Patriots edge Wingham in Game 3

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots scored twice in the final seven minutes of the third period to rally for a 3-2 victory over the Wingham Ironmen in PJHL Pollock Division semifinal play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The win gives Mount Forest a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The Patriots never led in the game until Brody Leblanc completed the scoring in the game with a shorthanded tally with 4:32 to go in the third.

The teams had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first period – Wingham scored first – and the Ironmen struck for the lone goal of the second. Mount Forest pulled even at 13:14 of the third and Leblanc scored the winner 2:14 later.

Elijah Brahaney scored the other two goals for the Patriots while Aidan Doig, Jordan Leitch, Leblanc, Charlie Mckenzie, Brahaney and Adam Murray each had one assist.

Kyle Stanbury and Coleson Fischer had the goals for Wingham while assists went to Matt Tolton, Jonah Burley, Stanbury and Dawson Fahrer.

The Ironmen outshot the Patriots 39-24 including a 26-11 advantage in the first two periods. Wingham took 13 shots each period.

While both teams had four power plays, Wingham netted the game’s lone power-play goal.

Vance Meyer had 37 saves in the Mount Forest net while Garrett Golley had 21 for Wingham.

The game attracted a season-high 953 spectators. Previous best was 608 for the opening game of the series last Wednesday while the regular-season high was 600 for a tilt Nov. 12 against the Hanover Barons.

Fourth game of the series is set for Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at Wingham’s North Huron Wescast Community Centre while the fifth game is to go Friday at 8 p.m. at Mount Forest.

Winner of the series will play the winner of the other divisional semifinal between Hanover and the Mitchell Hawks in the Pollock final. The Barons lead that series 3-0 with Game 4 at Hanover Wednesday at 8 p.m.
