It’ll be Royals against Royals in girls’ rugby final

GUELPH – One thing is certain. The Royals will win the District 4/10 high school girls’ rugby championship match at the University of Guelph Thursday.

What remains to be decided is which Royals will win.

The Ross Royals and the Centre Dufferin Royals are to meet in the championship match after both posted semifinal victories Monday.

The game will be strictly for league bragging rights as both will advance to CWOSSA championship tournaments, Ross to the AAA tournament at Brantford May 24 and 26 and Centre Dufferin to the A/AA tournament they’ll host the same days.

 

Ross 15 Guelph CVI 0

The Royals scored an uncoverted try in the first half and two of them in the second half for the win in the closely-fought match.

Ross received a try apiece from A. Wilson, S. Abouchacra and K. Bruce.

The Royals have won seven of the last nine league finals and 14 since the league’s inception in 1994.

 

Centre Dufferin 22 Erin 0

The Royals scored four tries in the match at the Erin Public School.

Individual scorers were not reported.

Centre Dufferin is the defending champion, last year’s league title victory being their first.

 

Senior Boys Rugby

Ross 38 Guelph CVI 14

Isaac Misener, Luke Van Dam and Drew McQueen scored two tries apiece for Ross while Charlie Thurtell kicked four converts.

Logan Cako had a try and a conversion for GCVI while Matt Robinson scored the other try and Alexander Luken added a convert.

The result leaves Ross (5-0-0) as the league’s lone undefeated team heading into the final day of the regular season Wednesday. GCVI (5-1-0) gets the bye Wednesday.

Lourdes Crusaders (4-1-0) had the bye Monday.

Top four in the final stadings qualify for next Tuesday’s semifinals.

Semifinal winners are to meet in the championship match May 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Guelph Lakes Sports Fields.

 

Erin 20 Centre Dufferin 14

Erin scored four tries while Centre Dufferin had two.

Individual scorers were not reported.

The win was the first of the season for the Raiders (1-4-0) and leaves Centre Dufferin (0-5-0) all alone in seventh.

 

Centre Wellington 38 Centennial 32

James Bennett had two tries and four conversions for Centre Wellington while Jacob Martin, Luc Smees, Quincy Van Raaij and Jefferson Waltho each scored a try.

Individual scorers for Centennial were not reported.

Centre Wellington (2-3-0) moves ahead of Centennial (1-4-0) with the win.

 

Junior Boys Rugby

Ross 32 Guelph CVI 12

Ross Royals secured a first-place finish with the victory over the previously unbeaten Guelph CVI Green Gaels on the final day of the regular season.

The Royals finish at 4-0-0 while the Gaels place second at 3-1-0. They’re followed by the Centre Dufferin Royals at 2-2-0, Centre Wellington Falcons at 1-3-0 and Erin Raiders at 0-4-0.

The Falcons are to host the Raiders in the lone quarter-final playoff match Wednesday.

Semifinals are slated for next Tuesday with the final to go May 25 at 5:15 p.m. at the Guelph Lakes Sports Fields.

Monday, Nate had a try and a convert for Ross while single tries were added by Cohen, Nathan, Hayd, Adam and Brandon.

Bryson and Carter each scored a try for GCVI while Malin had a convert.

Full names for the scorers were not reported.

Centre Dufferin struck for 13 tries in the match while Erin had one.
