It’s cliché time as short-staffed Rocks edged by Milverton
MILVERTON – Bring out all the clichés for the Elora Rocks.
You know the ones. Their backs are against the wall. It’s now or never. There’s no tomorrow. It’s do or die.
The Rocks are in a situation where they can’t lose another game to the Milverton Four Wheel Drives in their Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey league’s A semifinal playoff series after Milverton scored a 4-3 win Sunday at the Perth East Recreation Complex.
The win gives Milverton a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
The teams were knotted 1-1 at the end of the first period and 2-2 after the second before the Drives shot ahead for good with two consecutive goals in the third. The Rocks closed the gap to a single goal with just under five minutes to play, but they couldn’t get the equalizer.
The Rocks put up the effort they did despite having a lineup of 11 players including both goaltenders. No complaining about not enough icetime in this game.
Andrew Whalen scored all three goals for Elora while Sam Bilton had two assists and Steve Dol and Kevin Tuckey had one apiece.
The Drives had a full lineup of 20 players including both goalies.
Mitchell Boertien, Chris Corbett, Curtis Rawn and Liam Buckley each had a goal for the hosts while assists went to Greg Huszarik, Drew McKee, Colin Martin, Dennis Dewar, Alex Uttley and Riley Conners.
Shots on net were not reported.
Colin Dunne was charged with the loss in the Elora net while Tim Bester picked up the win for Milverton.
Fifth game of the series is set for Friday at the Elora and District Community Centre. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
