In a match that saw the teams trade the lead throughout a little more than three quarters, the Hawks grabbed the victory with their fourth-quarter TDs. They went ahead for good just less than three minutes into the final quarter.

However, they led by a TD with a minute to go before scoring two touchdowns in the final minute.

Jacob Hespeler running back Quinten Springer scored his third TD of the quarter and fifth of the game when he broke through for a 25-yard run to the end zone.

The Hawks added their last TD of the game on the final play of the game as defensive back Logan Vatour returned an interception 85 yards for the score. As time had run out during the return and it made no difference to the game, Jacob Hespeler chose not to attempt the convert.

Resurrection had held the early lead when running back Raygan Schwindt scored to end the very first possession of the game.

Springer started his scoring and the scoring for the Hawks as he completed Jacob Hespeler’s first possession of the game with a two-yard plunge in for the major.

Springer’s other TDs, one in the third quarter and two in the third, came on runs of three yards, seven yards and 30 yards. He also had two TDs negated by penalties, one after a 35-yard run and the other after a 15-yard run. However, the Hawks did score TDs after both TD-cancelling penalties.

Liam Marsden hauled in a 25-yard pass from quarterback Jacob Bouck to give Jacob Hespeler its first lead of the game with 18.3 seconds to go in the opening quarter.

Resurrection responded with two consecutive TDs in the second quarter as McKenzie Jalen scored on a two-yard run and Schwindt scored on a four-yard run.

The Hawks tied the score at 21-21 with just less than three minutes to go in the first half when Bouck got into the end zone on a one-yard keeper play.

The tied score stood until the five-minute mark of the third quarter when Jalen scored on another two-yard run.

Springer’s TD on the three-yard run tied the score midway through the third quarter with his first of three consecutive touchdowns.

His third one of that streak put the Hawks ahead by 14 points about six minutes into the final quarter.

Resurrection came back to cut the gap to a single converted TD when Riley Webster hauled down an 18-yard scoring pass from quarterback Cole Henry with 2:41 to go in the game.

Things looked good for a comeback for the Phoenix when they recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but the drive fizzled out.

The kickers were perfect on the converts, Armaan Jass getting seven and Riley Greig getting five.

For the Hawks the title was their fourth in seven years as they had also won it in 2016 to 2018 inclusive while Resurrection last won in 2015.

Both the Hawks and Phoenix advance to the OFSAA Football Bowl Series festival at Alumni Stadium Monday to Wednesday next week. There’ll be three games each day.

Jacob Hespeler is to plays Korah CVS Colts of Sault Ste. Marie in the Northern Bowl Wednesday at 5 p.m. in what is to be last game of the nine-game festival.

Korah is the two-time defending champ of the Northern Bowl and the Colts also won the National Capital Bowl in 2018.

Resurrection is to play the Chaminade College Gryphons of Toronto in the Metro Bowl Monday at 5 p.m. Chaminade lost in the Golden Horseshoe Bowl last year, won the Metro Bowl in 2019 and lost the Independent Bowl in 2018.

Jacob Hespeler won the Central Bowl in 2018 while Resurrection won the Metro Bowl in 2015.
