Junior Gryphon AAA minor midgets edged at home

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons wrapped up the home portion of their pool play in the South Central AAA minor midget Ontario Cup playoffs with a 5-4 loss to the Grey-Bruce Highlanders Thursday night at the Victoria Road arena.

A win would have secured a berth in the semifinals for the Junior Gryphs.

The loss combined with a 4-3 win by the Southern Tier Admirals over the Hamilton Junior Bulldogs leaves the top four in the five-team pool in a tight pack. Top two move on to the semifinals.

The Junior Gryphs and Southern Tier are both at 4-2-0 while Grey-Bruce is at 3-3-0 and Hamilton is at 3-4-0. The Burlington Eagles trail at 2-5-0 and will not advance.

The Halton Hurricanes lead the other pool at 5-0-1 and they’re followed by the Oakville Rangers at 3-2-0, Brampton 45s at 2-3-1, Niagara North Stars at 2-2-0 and Buffalo Regals at 0-5-0.

Ty Anselmini led the Junior Gryphs with two goals and an assist while Mark McIntosh and Jackson Phillips each had a goal. Henry Turner and Dylan Richardson each had two assists while Ethan Broderick, Anselmini and Ryan Cook collected one assist apiece.

Alex Nap started in net for the Junior Gryphs, but he was relieved by Quinn Brown after yielding four goals. Brown played the final 25 minutes of the game and surrendered a single goal.

Austin Becker hit for two goals for Grey-Bruce while Jordan Moulton, Caleb Morrison and Aiden Hinsperger each netted single goals. Moulton had two assists while Becker and Kieran Moore each had one.

Ryan Wheeler was the winning netminder for the Highlanders.

The Junior Gryphs have two games left in their qualifier pool play, both on the road. They’re to play the Highlanders at Owen Sound Saturday afternoon and the Junior Bulldogs at Hamilton Sunday afternoon.
