Junior Gryphon midget AAAs secure third-place finish

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons slipped by the Grey-Bruce Highlanders 4-3 in South Central AAA minor midget hockey play Saturday at the West End arena.

Mark McIntosh, Dylan Richardson, Johnathon Mead and Henry Turner scored a goal apiece for the locals while Ty Anselmini had two assists and McIntosh, Mead and Turner each had one.

Aiden Hinsperger, Gavin Gibbons and Jack Weiser hit for a goal apiece for Grey-Bruce while assists went to Jordan Beisel, Wilson Shipp, Kieran Moore and Austin Becker.

Alex Nap picked up the win in the Guelph net with 28 saves while Carter Garvie had 34 saves for Grey-Bruce.

The win clinched a third-place finish for the Junior Gryphs who have two games left on their regular-season schedule.

The Halton Hurricanes lead at 22-6-3 and the Niagara North Stars are second at 20-6-6. They’re both locked into their final finishing positions as Niagara has completed its regular season. The Junior Gryphs are third at 19-9-2 and they’re followed by the Hamilton Junior Bulldogs at 12-11-8, Burlington Eagles at 12-13-6, Grey-Bruce at 10-12-9, Oakville Rangers at 10-13-8, Southern Tier Admirals at 12-15-4, Buffalo Regals at 5-17-9 and Brampton 45s at 3-23-5.

The Junior Gryphs are to play Grey-Bruce at Owen Sound Sunday at 5:15 p.m. and the Oakville Rangers at Oakville Monday at 7:40 p.m.

The Guelph squad will also be in the five-team playoff Qualifiers Group B with Hamilton and the teams that finish fifth through seventh. The qualifiers are to be finished by Feb. 10. Top two in the group advance to the semifinals that are to be played by March 3 and the two semifinal winners get berths in the OHL Cup tournament. The semifinal losers will play for the league’s other berth in the OHL Cup tournament.
