Junior Gryphon U18 AAAs double Soo to reach semifinals

TORONTO – The Guelph Junior Gryphons gained a berth in the semifinals of the Ontario Hockey Federation U18 AAA championship tournament with a 4-2 victory over the Soo Junior Greyhounds Friday at the Scotiabank Pond.

Two goals in the third period gave the locals the victory as the teams had traded goals throughout the first two periods.

Madden Macdougall was involved in three of Guelph’s goals as he scored one of them and set up two of them. Will Elliott, Ethan Yantha and Ryan Tait also recorded goals while Austen Pomerleau and Yantha each had an assist.

Lincoln Moore and Callum Mcauley scored for Soo while Hudson Chitaroni, Carmine Perna and Evan Roach each had an assist.

Shots on goal were not recorded.

Hayden Sabourin was in net for the Junior Gryphs while Charlie Burns was in net for the Soo.

Both teams were assessed seven minor penalties and the Junior Gryphs had two power-play goals.

The win gave the Junior Gryphs the fourth and final playoff berth in the six-team tournament.

Toronto Young Nationals finished first at 4-0-1 and were followed by the Mississauga Reps at 3-0-2, Nepean Raiders at 3-1-1, Junior Gryphs at 2-3-0, Soo at 1-4-0 and Huron-Perth Lakers at 0-5-0.

The Junior Gryphs and Young Nationals are to meet in the second semifinal Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Mississauga and Nepean are to battle in the other one starting at 3 p.m.

Semifinal victors are to meet in Sunday’s gold-medal match at 2:30 p.m. while the semifinal losers are to battle in the bronze-medal match Sunday at 12 noon.
