Junior Gryphons AAA minor midgets doubled by Buffalo

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – The Guelph Junior Gryphons completed their South Central AAA minor midget hockey league season with a 4-2 loss in the quarter-finals to the Buffalo Regals at the Holiday Twin Rinks Saturday night.

The result clinches a spot in the semifinals for Buffalo and knocks the Junior Gryphs out of the league playoffs.

Luke Johnston and Jake Karabela had a goal apiece for the locals while Kyle Kussmann assisted on both goals and Madden Steen and Ethan Lewis each had one assist.

Richard Szajek was in net for the Junior Gryphs.

Buffalo leads Group B of the league’s quarter-finals at 6-2-0 while the Oakville Rangers are second at 5-2-0 with a game to go. Both have clinched berths in the semifinals. The Junior Gryphs finish third at 4-3-1 while the Burlington Eagles are fourth at 2-6-0 and Grey-Bruce Highlanders are fifth at 1-5-1 with a Sunday game against Oakville left on their schedule.

Southern Tier Admirals (6-0-1) and Niagara North Stars (4-1-2) advance to the semifinals out of Group A.

The Junior Gryphs had finished fourth at the end of the regular season at 15-9-8. Southern Tier had finished first at 24-3-5 with Niagara second at 17-7-8, Oakville third at 17-9-6 and Buffalo sixth at 14-13-5. While the Regals had two losses and two ties in their final four games of the regular season, those games followed a 12-game unbeaten streak and 11-game winning streak.
