Junior Gryphons AAA minor midgets to play Niagara

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons will face the Niagara North Stars in the South Central AAA minor midget OHL Cup qualifier semifinals.

That was decided Monday when Niagara dropped the Buffalo Regals 6-1 to clinch second place in their pool in the preliminary round of the qualifiers.

The Junior Gryphs had secured a first-place finish in their pool Sunday when they tripled the Hamilton Junior Bulldogs 6-2 at Stoney Creek’s Gateway Ice Centre.

Scoring details from that game were not available.

That win left the Junior Gryphs at 6-2-0, the same record as the Southern Tier Admirals who defeated the Grey-Bruce Highlanders 4-1 at Pelham Sunday. However, the Guelph squad was placed first in the group as it won the tie-breaker with Southern Tier.

Southern Tier will play the Halton Hurricanes in the other semifinal.

Semifinal victors gain berths in the OHL Cup tournament.

The schedules for the semifinals have not been decided.

Halton finished first in the league at the end of the regular season with a 23-6-3 record. Niagara was second at 20-6-6, Guelph third at 20-9-3 and Southern Tier tied for fifth at 13-15-4.

The Junior Gryphs and Niagara met four times during the regular season and split those games. Niagara won 6-2 Sept. 24 and 5-3 Dec. 8 while the Junior Gryphs prevailed 3-1 Dec. 12 and 2-1 Jan. 2.
