The Junior Gryphons didn’t yield any touchdowns in the South Division final.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Wolverines opened the scoring with a field goal by Jaxson Zurby in the second quarter.

However, Guelph led at halftime thanks to a touchdown by Ben Cottrell in the final minute of the opening half. Max Nixon booted the convert.

The locals added single touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to complete their scoring while they also conceded a safety in the final quarter.

Keyon Robinson caught a TD pass from Niko Jean Gaston for the second Guelph touchdown and Brandon Reilly scored the final touchdown of the game on a run around the left side. Nixon converted both of those TDs.

The Junior Gryphons had finished first in the South Division at 7-1-0 while Woodstock was second at 5-2-0.

Guelph is also to face York Region in the regional junior varsity final after the Lions blanked the Sudbury Spartans 6-0 in the North Division final Saturday at Sudbury.

The Spartans had finished first in the North Division at 6-2-0 while York Region was second at 5-2-0.

Sunday’s regional JV final is to start at 3 p.m.

Regional Bantam

The Junior Gryphons rode a first-quarter touchdown by Owen Ellis to the win.

Actually, it was the convert booted by 12 C Taylor that proved to be the difference in the defensive struggle.

Zach Delwo of Woodstock scored the touchdown for the Wolverines midway through the fourth quarter. The deciding moment of the game came when the visitors decided to go for a two-point convert and were stopped.

Guelph had finished atop the South Division at 7-1-0 while Woodstock was second at 6-2-0.

The Junior Gryphons are to face the North Division champion York Region Lions in the final Aug. 4 at 12 noon.

The Lions won the North final Saturday with a 27-20 win over the Orangeville Outlaws at Aurora. York Region was also 7-1-0 in the regular season.

That loss for the Lions came when the Junior Gryphons won 16-15 at Alumni Stadium June 29 in the regular-season meeting between the teams.
