Junior Gryphs AAA minor midgets facing must-win game

GUELPH – The aspirations the Guelph Junior Gryphons have of reaching the South Central AAA minor midget hockey league’s semifinals come down to their final game of their quarter-final round-robin.

The Junior Gryphs are to play the Buffalo Regals at Cheektowaga’s Holiday Twin Rinks Saturday at 8 p.m. The winner will move on to the semifinals while the loser is out of the league playoffs.

Thursday at the West End arena, the Junior Gryphs were edged 2-1 by the Oakville Rangers. That win secured a berth in the semifinals for the Rangers as they moved into a tie for first in Group B with Buffalo, one point ahead of the Junior Gryphs.

While Oakville and Buffalo can finish in a tie for either first or second in the group, Oakville will win the tie-breaker thanks to winning both of its playoff games with the Regals.

The Junior Gryphs can finish first in the pool with a win over Buffalo Saturday and a loss by Oakville to the Grey-Bruce Highlanders in Oakville Sunday.

Oakville and Buffalo are tied for the lead in the group with 5-2-0 records while the Junior Gryphs are third at 4-2-1. Burlington Eagles are fourth at 2-5-0 and Grey-Bruce is fifth at 0-5-1.

Southern Tier Admirals lead Group A at 5-0-1 and the Niagara North Stars are second at 4-1-2. Both have clinched spots in the semifinals. Hamilton Junior Bulldogs are third at 2-2-3 while the Halton Hurricanes are fourth at 1-4-2 and Brampton 45s fifth at 0-5-2.

Thursday, Rowan Aljoe had an unassisted goal for the Junior Gryphs.

Evan Parisotto was in net for the locals.

The league’s semifinals are to start next week and they pit the first-place finisher in one pool against the second-place finisher in the other.
