Junior Gryphs AAA minor midgets take semifinal opener

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Junior Gryphons opened their South Central AAA minor midget OHL Cup qualifier semifinal series with a 2-1 victory over the Niagara North Stars Sunday night at the Seymour-Hannah Sports & Entertainment Centre.

The Junior Gryphs gained their berth in the semifinal by finishing atop their pool in the preliminary round with a 6-2-0 record. Niagara was second in the other pool with an identical 6-2-0 mark.

Guelph completed its pool play with a 6-2 victory over the Hamilton Junior Bulldogs.

Scoring details for either game for the locals were not available.

However, scoring totals for the two games combined were available as Ty Anselmini had three goals and an assist and Mark McIntosh, Ethan Broderick, Johnathon Mead, Henry Turner and Dylan Richardson scored once apiece. Richardson had three assists while McIntosh had two and Broderick, Jackson Phillips, Dylan Hudon, Sam Barry and Mead each had one.

Alex Nap was in goal for both wins.

Second game of the semifinal series is slated for Tuesday at the West End arena. Game time is 9 p.m.

Third game is to go in St. Catharines Thursday at 8 p.m. and the fourth game is scheduled for Friday at 9 p.m. at the West End arena.

If a fifth game is needed, it’s set for Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Catharines.

If a sixth game is required, it’s to be played Feb. 25 at 8:45 p.m. at the West End arena.

Winner of the series will gain a berth in the annual OHL Cup tournament.
