Junior Gryphs AAA minor midgets tie one on with Niagara

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons and Niagara North Stars battled to a 5-5 standoff in South Central AAA minor midget Ontario Cup qualifying action Tuesday night at the West End arena.

The tie leaves the Junior Gryphs leading the six-point series 3-1.

Mark McIntosh was involved in all five goals for Guelph as he scored two of them and assisted on the other three. Dylan Richardson also had a pair of goals while Ty Anselmini collected a goal and an assist. Ethan Broderick had two assists and Nicholas Volkov had one.

Alex Nap was in net for the Junior Gryphs.

Matteo Giampa had a hat trick for Niagara while Nathan Kelly and Parker Hendsbee also scored. Connor Federkow and Jackson Riediger collected two assists apiece and Tye Meloche, Dawson Abrahams and Liam Shwedyk each had one assist.

Owen Faris tended goal for Niagara.

Third game of the series is set for Thursday night at St. Catharines. The fourth game is to go Friday at 9 p.m. at the West End arena.

The Halton Hurricanes made it three wins in three games with the Southern Tier Admirals in the other semifinal with a 4-2 win at the Milton Sports Centre Tuesday.

Lawson Sherk had two goals for Halton while Jordan Adams and Ethan Burroughs added one apiece. Calum Chau, Nolan Milne and Burroughs each had one assist.

Matteo Drobac picked up the win in net for Halton.

The Southern Tier Admirals received single goals from Nathan Brockington and Colton Chipman while single assists went to Griffin Vaughan, Tyler Bowen and Christopher Angelo.

Eric Randall was tagged with the loss in net for the Admirals.

The OHL Cup is set to be played March 12 to 18. All games except the championship match are to be played at the Scotiabank Pond in Toronto while the final is to go March 18 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
