Junior Gryphs AAA minor midgets top Burlington to start playoffs
BURLINGTON – The Guelph Junior Gryphons opened their South Central AAA minor midget hockey league’s playoffs with a 5-3 victory over the Burlington Eagles Thursday night at Burlington’s Central Recreation Centre.
Jake Karabela scored twice for the Junior Gryphs while Daniel McCuen, Rowan Aljoe and Luke Johnston added single goals. Liam Power assisted on two of the goals while Aljoe, Liam Stadnyk, Johnston and Ryan Tait each had one assist.
Ryan McGuire, Brock Leuschner and Kyle McMillan each had a goal for Burlington. McGuire assisted on both goals he didn’t score while Leuschner, McMillan Chuck Rawson and Andrew Swartz each had one assist.
Richard Szajek was in net for the win for the Junior Gryphons while Colton Donaldson took the loss in the Burlington net.
The two teams are in the five-team Group B for the round-robin playoff openers. That group includes the teams that finished third through seventh at the completion of the league’s regular season.
The Junior Gryphs were fourth and Burlington sixth.
Other teams in the group are the third-place Oakville Rangers, fifth-place Buffalo Regals and seventh-place Grey-Bruce Highlanders.
The Junior Gryphs are to host Buffalo Sunday at the Gryphon Centre. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
