Junior Gryphs dropped twice in AAA minor midget tourney

WHITBY – The Guelph Junior Gryphons suffered a pair of losses on the opening day of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association’s AA minor midget tournament at Whitby’s Iroquois Park arena.

The Junior Gryphs were downed 4-2 by the Quinte Red Devils and 6-2 by the Whitby Wildcats.

After a scoreless first period, Quinte scored twice in each of the second and third periods while Dylan Hudon and Mark McIntosh had unassisted goals in the third for Guelph.

Connor Brooks, Lucas Lapalm, Daniel Michaud and Ethan Broek had a goal apiece for Quinte.

Whitby led 1-0 after the first period and 3-2 after the second before netting three goals in the third.

Ryan Cook had a goal and an assist for the Junior Gryphs while Ethan Gore scored the other goal and McIntosh had an assist.

Thomas Johnston tallied twice for Whitby while single goals were added by Mikael Simon-Serroul, Ryan Winterton, Douglas Carr and Noah Theodor.

Whitby tops the standings midway through the round-robin segment of the tournament at 2-0-0. The Wildcats are followed by the York-Simcoe Express at 1-0-1, Quinte at 1-1-0, Halton Hurricanes at 0-1-1 and the Junior Gryphs at 0-2-0.

The Junior Gryphs are to play York-Simcoe at 12 p.m. and Halton at 5 p.m.

A finish in the top four earns a team a guaranteed spot in the OHL Cup while a fifth-place finish gets them a berth in a play-in game in that tournament.

Sunday’s schedule consists of the bronze-medal game at 10 a.m. and the gold-medal game at 12:30 p.m.
