Junior Gryphs edged in minor midget AAA playoff opener

PELHAM – The Guelph Junior Gryphons opened their South Central AAA minor midget playoffs with a 2-1 loss to the Southern Tier Admirals Tuesday night at the Meridian Community Centre.

Sam Barry had the goal for the locals while Ethan Broderick and Ryan Cook assisted on the play.

Josh Reilly and Zach McDonald collected a goal apiece for Southern Tier while Nick Paone assisted on both goals. Nathan Brockington and Chris Angelo each had one assist.

Both teams took 27 shots during the match.

Alex Nap was tagged with the loss in the Guelph net while Ben Bonisteel picked up the win in the Southern Tier net.

The game was the first for the Junior Gryphs in the Group B double round-robin playoffs. They’re to host the Hamilton Junior Bulldogs Friday at 7:45 p.m. at the West End arena.

The game was also the first of the playoffs for Southern Tier. Hamilton, Grey-Bruce Highlanders and Burlington Eagles are the other teams in the group and all three have identical 1-1-0 records.

Niagara North Stars and Brampton 45s lead Group A at 1-0-0 while Buffalo Regals and Oakville Rangers are both at 0-1-0. Halton Hurricanes are to open their playoffs Wednesday night at Niagara.

Top two teams in each pool advance to the best-of-three semifinals with the first-place team in one pool playing the second-place team in the other pool.

Semifinal winners gain berths in the OHL Cup tournament and will be joined by the winner of the OHL Cup qualifier game between the two semifinal losers.
