Junior Gryphs fourth in OHF U18 AAA tourney

TORONTO – The Guelph Junior Gryphons finished in fourth place in the Ontario Hockey Federation’s U18 AAA championship tournament Sunday at the Scotiabank Pond.

The Junior Gryphs were edged 6-5 by the Nepean Raiders who rallied with the final three goals of the bronze-medal game for the win.

The Junior Gryphs had led 2-1 at the end of the first period before the teams scored twice apiece in the second. The locals added a goal early in the third to extend their lead to two goals before Nepean’s final spree.

Luke Van Dam, Roenick Jakielaszek, Nolan Hendry, Will Elliott and Callum Snedden scored the goals for the Junior Gryphs while Madden MacDougall collected three assists and Hendry had one.

Scoring a goal apiece for Nepean were Luke Posthumus, Brayden Melenhorst, Cole Beaudoin, Wade Boudrias, Luca Benoit and Treyson Dewar. Single assists were awarded to Dewar, Paolo Peloso, Matthew Pluscauskas, Mason Fewster, Benoit and Beaudoin.

Hayden Sabourin was in net for Guelph while Nepean had Dom Amodeo between the pipes. Shots on goal were not recorded.

The Junior Gryphs went 2-for-6 on their power play and also scored a shorthanded goal. The Raiders were scoreless on four power plays.

The Mississauga Reps won the OHF title with a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Young Nationals in the gold-medal game. Toronto had the only goal of the first period while Mississauga scored twice in the second and once in the final minute of the game.
