Junior Gryphs have to play way into OHL Cup main draw

WHITBY – If the Guelph Junior Gryphons are going to participate in the main portion of the OHL Cup AAA minor midget hockey tournament, they’ll have to play their way in.

The Junior Gryphs will play in one of that tournament’s play-in games after finishing fifth in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association’s AA minor midget championship tournament at Whitby’s Iroquois Park.

The Junior Gryphs are the lone team in the tournament that won’t play in a medal games Sunday.

The Whitby Wildcats and Halton Hurricanes will play in the gold-medal game after they finished first and second at the end of round-robin play. Whitby won all four of its games while Halton finished at 2-1-1. The York-Simcoe Express was third at 1-2-1 while the Quinte Red Devils and Guelph both finished at 1-3-0. Quinte was awarded fourth thanks to its 4-2 victory over Guelph Friday.

Saturday, the Junior Gryphs edged York-Simcoe 2-1 and were edged 4-3 by Halton.

Ty Aselmini and Sam Barry scored against York-Simcoe while Dylan Hudon had an assist. Cole Turcotte scored for York-Simcoe.

Johnathon Mead, Hudon and Henry Turner each had a goal against Halton while assists went to Turner, Barry, Ethan Gore and Ryan Cook.

Jorden Drake scored twice for Halton while single goals were added by Ethan Burroughs and Braedyn McIntosh.

Quinte and York-Simcoe are to play in Sunday’s bronze-medal game that is to start at 10 a.m. while the gold-medal match is to feature Halton against Whitby.

The OHL Cup is set for March 12 to 18 with the play-in games to go March 12.
