Junior Gryphs in OMHA AAA minor midget tourney

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons left nothing to doubt in the final game of their six-point South Central AAA minor midget semifinal series with the Niagara North Stars Monday night at the West End arena.

One team was going to win the series and a berth in the OMHA championship series in Whitby that is to start Friday while the other team was done for the season.

The Junior Gryphs made sure it was them that was still playing as they hammered Niagara 8-1.

The teams had each entered the game with two wins, two losses and a tie and they had each scored a total of 13 goals.

Jackson Phillips scored twice for the locals while single goals were added by Mark McIntosh, Ethan Broderick, Ty Anselmini, Ryan Cook, Ethan Gore and Dylan Richardson. McIntosh assisted on three of the goals while Anselmini and Richardson each had two assists and Phillips and Gore had one apiece.

Liam Shwedyk scored for Niagara while Parker Hendsbee drew an assist on the goal.

Alex Nap picked up the win in the Guelph net and Ian Dunn was tagged with the loss in the Niagara net.

The Junior Gryphs join the Halton Hurricanes, York-Simcoe Express, Quinte Red Devils and Whitby Wildcats in the three-day OMHA championship tournament. All five teams also gain berths in the OHL Cup tournament – four with guaranteed spots and the fifth with a place in a play-in game.

The OMHA championship tournament schedule has not been released, but the medal games are to be played Sunday starting with the bronze-medal match at 10 a.m. and finishing with the gold-medal match at 12:30 p.m.

The tournament is to be held at Whitby’s Iroquois Park complex.
