Junior Gryphs minor midget AAAs edged in Marlies tourney

TORONTO – The Guelph Junior Gryphons suffered a 2-1 loss to the Brantford 99ers in their lone game in the minor midget AAA category of the Toronto Marlboros International Holiday Classic Friday.

The result leaves the Junior Gryphs with a win, loss and tie heading into the third day of the tournament Saturday, the final day of round-robin pool play.

The Junior Gryphs are to wrap up the preliminary round with a game against the Markham Majors.

Markham leads the division with two wins and a tie while Brantford and the Peterborough Junior Petes are tied at 2-2-0. Guelph follows at 1-1-1 and the Buffalo Regals are at 0-2-2.

The Guelph-Markham game is the only one left in the division.

Top 16 in the field of 60 advance to the playoff round.

In the minor bantam AAA category, the Guelph Junior Gryphons were shut out 4-0 by the Chicago Fury Friday.

The Junior Gryphs have lost all three of their games.

They’ll complete their stay in the tournament with a game against the Kitchener Junior Rangers Saturday.

Top eight in the 20-team tournament advance to the playoff round.


Hespeler Olympics Tournament

The Junior Gryphs will play in Saturday’s novice select final after getting a win and a tie Friday.

The locals tied the Markham Waxers 1-1 and followed that with a 4-2 victory over the Caledon Hawks.

The Junior Gryphs and Caledon are to meet in Saturday’s final.

Caledon finished atop the standings at 3-1-0 and were followed by the Junior Gryphs at 2-1-1, Brantford 99ers and Innisfil Winterhawks both at 2-2-0 and Markham at 0-3-1.


Richard Bell Memorial Tournament

The Junior Gryphs had a win and a tie in the minor peewee AA category Friday during the Oakville tournament’s opening day.

The locals started with a 2-2 tie with Burlington Eagles Blue before they downed the Niagara Falls Flyers 5-1.

The Junior Gryphs are to complete the preliminary round Saturday with games against the Oakville Rangers Red and Mississauga North Stars.

The Junior Gryphs split their games in minor bantam A Friday as they rebounded from a 7-2 loss to the Burlington Eagles in their opening game with a 3-0 victory over Oakville Rangers AE.

Saturday, the Junior Gryphs are to play the Oakville Rangers Blue and Welland Tigers to complete the preliminary round.


International Silver Stick

The Junior Gryphs completed the preliminary round in the novice A category of the Brampton Regional tournament with a 5-2 loss to the Centre Wellington Fusion Friday.

The result left Centre Wellington atop the pool at 3-0-0 while the Junior Gryphs and Markham Waxers tied at 1-1-1 and Richmond Hill Stars trailed at 0-3-0.

Centre Wellington advances to Saturday’s final where they’re to play the Whitby Wildcats Blue who were 3-0-0 in the other pool.


Ray Hunt Memorial Classic

The Junior Gryphons suffered a pair of losses in the bantam select category Friday during the Orangeville tournament’s opening day.

The Junior Gryphs were edged 3-2 by the Orangeville and dropped 11-3 by Acton.

The Guelph squad is to complete round-robin play with a game against Centre Wellington Saturday.


Vic Teal Tournament

The Junior Gryphs had a loss and a tie in the novice BB-AE category Friday on the opening day of the tournament in St. Catharines.

The locals tied the Woolwich Wildcats 2-2 and lost 6-3 to the Newcastle Stars.

The Junior Gryphs are to complete round-robin play Saturday with games against the West Lincoln Wrath and Niagara-on-the-Lake Wolves.


Bell Capital Cup

The Junior Gryphs suffered a pair of losses Friday on the opening day of play in the minor atom AA category at the tournament in Ottawa.

The locals were edged 3-2 by the Ottawa Sting and downed 6-1 by the Eastern Ontario Cobras.

Tyler Kelly and Lucas Surette scored power-play goals against the Ottawa Sting while Jake Annis had an assist.

Annis scored against Eastern Ontario with help from Kelly.

The Junior Gryphs are to play the Gloucester Rangers and Ottawa Valley Silver Seven Saturday.
