Junior Gryphs slip by Southern Tier in minor midget AAA playoffs
GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons scored their third consecutive South Central AAA minor midget hockey playoff victory Thursday night at the West End arena as they slipped by the Southern Tier Admirals 4-3
Dylan Hudon and Johnathon Mead scored twice apiece for the Junior Gryphs while assists were awarded to Ethan Broderick, Jackson Phillips, Samuel Barry and Nicholas Volkov.
Alex Nap picked up the win in net.
Southern Tier’s goals were scored by Zane Gilmour, Griffin Vaughan and Colton Chipman while Harrison Langerak, Gilmour and Christopher Angelo each had one assist.
Eric Randall took the loss in the Southern Tier net.
The result leaves the Junior Gryphs at 3-1-0 midway through OHL Cup qualifying pool play. The Hamilton Junior Bulldogs are at 3-2-0 while the other three teams in the pool — Southern Tier, Burlington Eagles and Grey-Bruce Highlanders – are each at 1-2-0.
The Junior Gryphs were to have played Grey-Bruce at Owen Sound Wednesday night, but that game was postponed due to the weather and it has been rescheduled to Feb. 9.
The locals are to play at Burlington Monday night.
The Junior Gryphs have one home game left in the pool – Thursday against Grey-Bruce at the Victoria Road arena at 8 p.m.
Top two teams in each of the two pools advance to the best-of-three OHL Cup qualifying semifinals. Winners of those games get berths in the OHL Cup tournament while the losers will meet in a single game to decide the league’s third entry in the tournament.
