K-W Braves fade to lose to Whitby in overtime

KITCHENER – The Kitchener-Waterloo Braves surrendered three goals in a 10-minute overtime period as they were downed 12-10 by the Whitby Warriors in Ontario junior A lacrosse league play Sunday night at the Kinsmen Arena.

The Braves scored a single goal in the overtime period.

K-W squandered a four-goal lead with 10 minutes to go in regulation time.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period and the Braves shot ahead 7-5 by the end of the second. The hosts tallied twice in the first eight minutes of the third before Whitby rallied to force the game into overtime.

Scott DelZotto struck for four goals for K-W while Jackson Reid scored twice and Spencer Pyke, Jake Stevens, Kyle Driscoll and Devyn Orpana added single goals. Tye Kurtz assisted on four of the goals while Stevens had three assists, Orpana, Jonah Boehm, Daire Newbrough and Reid had two each and DelZotto and Pyke had one apiece.

Tanner Cook connected for six goals for Whitby while Bryce Yetman and Ryan Barnable fired home two goals apiece. Mathieu Boissonneault and Devin Pipher rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece while Yetman had three assists, Dyson Williams and Cook two apiece and Tyler Eames, Parker Pipher, Barnable, Graydon Hogg, Boissonneault and Luke Keenan one each.

The Braves outshot Whitby 52-50 and went 3-for-4 on their power play while the Warriors went 1-for-3.

Joel Watson had 42 saves in getting the win in net for Whitby. Steve Orleman had 38 saves in the loss for K-W.

The Braves dropped to 4-7-0 with their fifth consecutive loss while Whitby improved to 5-6-0 with its second win in five days.

The Braves are to host the Burlington Chiefs (7-2-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. at Kinsmen Arena.
